Mulch estimating tool
Mulch Depth Calculator
Estimate mulch cubic yards for landscape beds and learn how depth, bed prep, edging, delivery and access affect installed mulch quotes.
Mulch formula
Cubic yards = bed square feet × mulch depth in inches ÷ 324. Add a small buffer for uneven beds, settling and cleanup.
What the calculator does not include
Material quantity is only part of the job. Edging, weeding, old debris, delivery distance, wheelbarrow access, dumping area and cleanup all affect the installed quote.
Avoid volcano mulching
Do not pile mulch against tree trunks, shrub stems or siding. Mulch should help retain moisture and reduce weeds, not trap moisture against living stems or structures.

Questions homeowners ask
Frequently asked questions
How many cubic yards of mulch do I need?
Multiply bed square feet by desired depth in inches, then divide by 324. Add a small buffer for settling and uneven beds.
Does the calculator include edging and weeding?
No. The calculator estimates material quantity only. Edging, weeding, delivery, cleanup and disposal affect the final installed quote.
How deep should fresh mulch be?
Many refresh jobs work around two inches if old mulch is present. Bare beds may need more, but too much mulch can cause problems.
Where can DIY homeowners get supplies?
Local homeowners can compare material options through nearby landscape supply stores. Always confirm current product availability and delivery terms directly with the supplier.
